From Beyond

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. This was the likely motto of Stuart Gordon and his team whilst making From Beyond. Following in the footsteps of Re-Animator, Gordon uses essentially the same cast, another Lovecraft tale, and copious amounts of gore to try and re-create the vibe from his earlier entry which was destined for the horror hall of fame.

Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) assists the brilliant Edward Pretorius in creating a resonator machine that enables them to expand their pineal gland, which in turn opens up another dimension full of horrors from beyond.

Pretorius is obsessed with the resonator and is eventually killed by the machine, or is he? Tillinghast is thought to be the killer and mistakenly diagnosed with Schizophrenia. In comes a hot doctor chick that wants to re-create the resonator that caused Tillinghast to go crazy. No one ever said the plot had to make a lot of sense.

The doctor and Tillinghast, along with a goofy cop go back to the lab and bring the resonator to life once again. Craziness ensues. Deep sea-like monsters, including eels and jellyfish begin swirling around the room. These aren’t ordinary sea creatures though, no, more like mutants with tons of teeth and a thirst for human blood. Then it comes. Dr. Pretorious is back as a mutated blob like creature intent absorbing everyone.

Eventually, Tillinghast grows a snake that pops out of his forehead. The snake has a voracious appetite for human brains. The doctor decides to become a dominatrix for a bit, and she eventually ends up in the nuthouse with Tillinghast. At this point it’s safe to say that this move will not be mistaken for Schindler’s List.

The climax brings everyone back to the lab so Gordon can attempt to throw in as much gore as possible into the last 10 minutes. This works wonderfully, in fact, depending on your constitution you may be thoroughly disgusted.

While not quite on par with Re-Animator, Gordon is still able to deliver a worthy horror flick that more than holds its own today. If you like bloody mutations, disgusting gore effects, taboo sex, and gruesomely over the top horror, you can’t go wrong with From Beyond.
