Near Dark

For tonight, I watched another ‘80s classic vampire flick that, like The Hunger, isn’t your average every day run-of-the-mill vampire schlock.

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) back when she was still married to Mr. James Cameron, comes a tale of a different sort of vampire. The vamps here aren’t your uptight well-dressed seducers that audiences are so familiar with. No, here the vamps are rough, rugged, maniacal killers. They travel in a RV during the day, feast at night, and burn crap down for fun. They remind me of vampire versions of Martin Sheen in Badlands.

The plot follows a tough cowboy who falls for a beautiful girl who just happens to bite him on the neck. He turns into a bloodsucker and is tested by her crew to make sure he “one of them” and not some pussy. Well, he is a pussy, but he is in love so he puts up with some craziness including an incredibly awesome and memorable scene in a bar. That scene alone is worth the price of admission.

Featuring a cast partially borrowed from Aliens (Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jeanette Goldstein) Bigelow makes a unique and interesting film that plays out like a chick-flick and a western blood bath at the same time.

Lots to talk about here if I had the time, but I don’t so I will keep this short and start with Bill Paxton. He owns this movie like nothing else he has ever done. This is one of his finest performances, if not his best, on screen. Henriksen is also awesome, as always, playing a tough western vampire who at one point fought for the South (American Civil War). Everyone else besides the kid is rock solid also.

If it wasn’t for the end of the film I think many more people would hail this film as an all-time great. Spoiler: Apparently a blood transfusion turns vamps back into humans. Lame with a capital L.

Still, this is a must watch for any horror enthusiast. The only question is how long will it take for the DVDs and Blu-Rays to boldly claim “From Academy Award winning director of The Hurt Locker.”
