Welcome to my countdown of the best horror films of each year (and decade). I am starting with 2009 and working my way back all the way until 1970 or so. If all pans out the way I imagine, I will post one or two top 10 horror movie lists per week until I run out of years. A bit daunting, sure, but it should be fun in addition to my daily horror review.
You can find all of my top horror movie lists here.
Considering it was a rather weak year in horror, I expanded the boundaries a little and included a few outliers. If that pisses you off, I don’t care. Enjoy!
Noteworthy films that didn’t make the cut: Dracula 2000, Pitch Black
10. Hollow Man
You know you only watched this see the invisible rape scene, you dirty pervert. Be ashamed of yourself. Gotta love the Baconator!
9. Scary Movie
See Scream 3 below.
8. Scream 3
I forgot, is this Scary Movie or not? The film that spoofs its source material is A-OK in my book. Scream 4 can’t get here fast enough.
7. Lost Souls
The Antichrist and Winona Ryder in one film! Superb cinematography. All around decent effort.
6. Under the Sand
A film that lodges itself under your skin and doesn’t let go. It’s an art film at heart (Read: Not a bloody horror movie), but still resonates on a disturbing and emotional level that few films in the last decade have been able to match.
5. The Ninth Gate
I wise man once said, “I have many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.” Johnny Depp and Roman “It was consensual, I swear” Polanski team up for an intriguing look into the depraved world of supernatural book collectors.
4. Final Destination
Death’s design is one tough sonuvabitch to try and outsmart.
3. Shadow of the Vampire
John Malkovich and Willam Defoe excel in film that will make you rethink the Nosferatu.
2. American Psycho
“You’re a f*cking ugly bitch. I want to stab you to death, and then play around with your blood.” – Patrick Bateman
1. Ginger Snaps
One of the best werewolf films ever made and my personal favorite in the genre.
